How to think in English?

As you are learning English as a second language, you will have this question in your mind that how to think in English?
Here I share some important tips to help you think in English.

• Using your vocabulary

You should start using those words to think in English which you have learnt from your surroundings, by listening to others, by reading in English or in any other way. It’s important to improve collection of new words in your vocabulary but it’s more important to use those words in your day to day conversation. To utilise those words in your conversation, you should start using those words while thinking in English. Here I would like to tell you very important thing that when you use new words or phrases while thinking in English, it’s not important to use them in sentences but it’s more important that you know their meanings and use them appropriately in appropriate situation.
Like: not well
ridiculous,
Good going,
Belated happy birthday,
Take care
etc.

• Be Imaginative : Talk to yourself

You have to be little bit imaginative. Choose a topic and pretend you’re speaking to someone about it.
You think about the situation. Like, you are giving an interview or you are talking to your friend and start thinking about possible conversation. Here, you have to play the role of a speaker and listener as you have to communicate all alone.
In this way you will imagine and think about a conversation which will give you a practice to speak fluently in that particular situation.

• Be a narrator

A narrator is someone who tells or reads the story. In books, the narrator describes the part without dialogue or what’s happening. Many movies like documentaries use narrators to explain certain parts. Now you get to pretend to be the narrator in your life.
It’s easier to narrate something than to communicate because while communicating with someone you don’t know what other person will say but while narrating something you know what you have to narrate. You can easily think to narrate something like you can narrate about your whole day or you can narrate about a particular situation etc. This tip will definitely help you improve your English speaking.

• Be Creative:

When you learn English as a second language, it happens many times that you get stuck to speak appropriately in a particular situation. You find yourself unable to find out an appropriate word to express yourself or to communicate exactly what you want to. In this situation when you don’t know the exact word to express yourself, you should think about other words to express yourself or to communicate your things well.
There’s always more than one way to express something. Even if you don’t know a word, you can get your idea across by thinking creatively and using other words.
For example: Your baby is sleeping and music is being played at high volume. You want to say, “slow down the music or turn down the volume” but you don’t know how to say this. In this situation, you can use another words to convey your message. Like: “My baby is sleeping and music is very loud. So please..”
If you don’t know about the word ventilator, you can explain it with other words.
Like: an opening that allows fresh air to come into a closed space

• Be Natural:

Whenever you think in English, let the flow come in your brain. Do not hesitate. Do not stop yourself to correct your mistakes. Let the mistakes happen. Just think and think in natural flow. Do not bother about your grammatical mistakes, punctuations or anything else. You have to remember about your fluency and the continuous process of thoughts. It will help you to be more fluent in English.

• Do not Translate

When you think in English, do not try to think in your mother tongue and then translate it in English. If you do such kind of translations, it will always hinder your English speaking and fluency while speaking in English.
When you think in English (without translating), this also helps you internalize the language.  You adopt that language naturally that reflects when you speak in English.
For example: When you use these sentences in your day to day conversation like
Shut the door.
Let’s go.
Excuse me.
How are you?
You do not translate these sentences and speak them naturally. In the same way when you think other sentences which you do not use in your daily conversation or which are new to you, you should think about those new sentences, words or phrases without translating them so that you may internalize English language easily.
This was all about importance of thinking in English and how to think in English.
