Infinitive “To’
This post is about infinitive ‘to’. I will discuss where should we avoid infinitive ‘to’. Use of infinitive ‘to’ is very common in English but there are certain places where we can’t use infinitive ‘to’.
Read these sentences below.
I want to complete my work.
She went to take more sheets. etc.
It is very common to use ‘to’ in such kind of sentences before verb.
Sometimes it happens that many people use ‘to’ where it should not be used. Read below carefully where should we avoid use of ‘to’.
- We don’t use ‘to’ with the noun home.
For example
He is going to school is correct.
He is going to home is incorrect.
So correct this error if you use ‘to’ with the word home.
- Don’t use ‘to’ after make/made
Pattern to use make in sentences is:
Make+person+base form of verb
No ‘to’ before base form of the verb.
For example
The principal made all the teachers recheck the papers. Correct
The principal made all the teachers to recheck the papers. Incorrect
- We don’t use ‘to’ with adverbs of location.
He is going abroad. Correct
Abroad is an adverb so we cannot use ‘to’ with abroad.
With adverbs like
In, out, somewhere, inside, outside, there, here etc. we cannot use ‘to’.
- ‘To’ is usually avoided with the verb ‘help’
For example
She helped me understand this lesson.
He helped her improve a lot.
If the meaning is succesafully coveyed, we do not use ‘to’ with the verb help.
